Soften smoker's lines with Botox

Smoker's lines are the narrow, vertical wrinkles that form in the skin above your upper lip. They're often called smoker's lines because repeatedly pursing your lips, as when smoking a cigarette, puts extra strain on the skin there. The name is a bit misleading though: anyone can get them, even if you've never smoked.

You mainly see smoker's lines with expressions: when smiling, talking, whistling or pursing your lips. At first they're often barely visible at rest, but as your skin becomes less elastic, the lines stay a little visible without movement too.

At Soap we treat smoker's lines with Botox, a brand name for a specific application of botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily relaxes the small muscles around your mouth, so the lines become softer.

Smoker's lines develop through a combination of factors. Repeated muscle movement around your mouth, such as pursing, talking and smiling, keeps creating the same small fold in the skin. Over time that fold becomes a permanent line, even when your mouth is at rest.

Skin ageing also plays a big role. As you get older, your skin produces less collagen and elastin, so it's less resilient and lines stay sooner. Sun, smoking and genetics speed up this process.

Smoking does speed up smoker's lines, partly through the repeated pursing movement and partly because smoking reduces blood flow to your skin. Still, non smokers get them too, often from their early thirties.
