These are the narrow, vertical lines in the skin above your upper lip, running up towards your nose. Some people call them smoker's lines, but you see them just as often in people who have never smoked.
For some they mainly show when talking, laughing or pursing the lips. For others they stay visible when the face is at rest. That difference partly determines which treatment makes sense.
They often continue around your mouth. Are your mouth corners drooping a little too? Then the doctor will also look at your marionette lines.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN
Your mouth area moves all day. Talking, laughing, drinking: the muscle around your mouth repeats the same movement, and over time that repetition shows in the skin.
Skin ageing adds to it. Your skin naturally produces less collagen and elastin, making it thinner and less springy. A line that first only appeared with movement then stays.
Volume loss plays a part too. When the support under the skin fades, the line above it deepens. Sunlight speeds up that process.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Every treatment starts with a free consult. Your doctor looks at your mouth area at rest and in motion, and creates a tailored plan with you.
If you go for a filler, the doctor places small amounts of hyaluronic acid in the lines with a fine needle and checks the result along the way.
If you go for Botox, it's a few small injections that relax the muscle around your mouth. Afterwards you simply carry on with your day.

The short version: a filler fills, Botox relaxes. If there's mainly volume loss under your lines, a filler is the logical route.
If your lines mainly come from your mouth area moving, Botox in the lip lines zone is the more obvious choice. Around the mouth the doctor doses carefully on purpose, so your smile stays yours.
In practice your doctor often looks at both, and at the skin quality around them. That conversation is part of the consult, not a menu you choose from beforehand.

No, and we don't promise that either. Your skin keeps moving and changes over the years, so no treatment stops those lines permanently. Anyone who promises that promises too much.
What we do is visibly soften the lines and maintain that result. Hyaluronic acid is gradually broken down by your body, so your doctor discusses when a follow up appointment makes sense. That way the result stays calm and natural instead of standing out.
